Dr. Komoo is the founder, CEO and Principal Advisor, Geopark and Geotourism Creative Solutions (GGCS) and a Principal Research Fellow at Langkawi Research Centre (PPL-UKM), LESTARI, UKM. He is a scholar in the fields of Earth Science specialised in Engineering Geology, Conservation Geology and Sustainability Science.
He graduated from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) and obtained his BSc. (Hons.) in Geologi (1972-1976), and later at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow (1976-1979) where he obtained his PhD in Engineering Geology. He is also the Head of Cluster for Environment and Sustainability, Academy of Professors Malaysia (APM), International Expert to the UNESCO Global Geopark, Co-Chair to Asia Pacific Geoparks Network (APGN), Vice-President of Global Geoparks Network Association (GGNA) and Advisor to Langkawi UNESCO Global Geopark.
He has been awarded the Langkawi Award by the Government of Malaysia, the highest honor awarded to individuals with significant contributions to environmental conservation in the country; and Science Excellence Award for Environmental Management by the International Union of Geological Science (IUGS). Formerly served as the Vice Chancellor of Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, Deputy Vice Chancellor of Research in Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Founder Director of Southeast Asia Disaster Prevention Research Institute (SEADPRI), Director for Institute for Environment and Development (LESTARI), President of the Geological Society of Malaysia, Vice-President of the Institute of Geology Malaysia and Vice-President of International Association of Engineering Geology (IAEG).
